Two years ago, Hartford's Faith Congregational Church lent the pulpit bible of Rev. James W.C. Pennington to the Smithsonian Institute of African American History and Culture, scheduled to open on September 24, 2016.
A fugitive slave, internationally known preacher, writer and abolitionist, James Pennington (1807-1870) was the first black student admitted to Yale University. In 1840 he became the minister of the Talcott Street Church, now known as Faith Congregational Church.
The Church is organizing an October 2016 bus trip - open to the public - to visit the new museum as well as other DC sites.
