Julia Rosenblatt, Artistic Director of HartBeat Ensemble, and Chris Pressley, a Hartford social worker, led the conversation. Both artists believe in the importance of art as a tool for social change. Mr. Pressley described the ways art and creativity challenge social norms and get people thinking differently about issues and experiences. Ms. Rosenblatt said that the power of art is that it is accessible; art can take ideas and perspectives that are not talked about it and translate them into other modes that are funny, dramatic or emotional. Art can also be used in protest, creating provocative signs or displays that add creativity to a demonstration.
